Welcome and check-In 08:15 saw the Team Manager arriving just in time to check each swimmer in and give each person their named lanyards (or “lost and found” badges as they became familiarly known as!) Matt explained the purpose of the Camp which was to invest in the education and development of Swimmers aged 12-15yrs. (age on year) along with the Coaches to increase the chance of the swimmers making Regional Championships and beyond. We said goodbye to the Parents and set off in the rain to the Pool. |

What it takes to become an Olympian Matt kicked off the session by noticing how few water bottles he could see and invited the swimmers to get them! In small groups the 24 County Swimmers and 5 Coaches were invited to put questions onto cards – the sorts of questions they would love to ask an Olympian and Ekaterina (Katie) used the questions to frame her talk to the swimmers. Dave, her Coach added his perspective on some aspects of Katie’s coach from a Coach’s viewpoint. The questions ranged from – “What age did you start to really commit to swimming?” through to “Did you ever think of giving up?” and “what was it like being at the Olympics?” |

Open Forum Parents and Swimmers were addressed by Matt Heathcock – County Coach . Matt talked about the importance of maintaining the investment in the County Pathway that has started to become embedded over the past two years. He shared his view that there is space for another Camp at the top end of the County for swimmers who are National Level maybe starting on the Friday and running through to Sunday with once every two years possibly taking the swimmers away to compete abroad as a way of not only supporting their development but also maintaining their excitement in the sport at a time of competing priorities. He encouraged parents also to come forward as Team Managers and Chaperones to support such a programme of development.
The swimmers were complimented on their behaviour by the Coaches and wished the best of luck for the coming season |

Unprompted Feedback to Matt and myself via email:
“Mary really enjoyed and got a lot out of the weekend in terms of technique, fitness, attitude and network.
Thanks to you, Matt and the other coaches for arranging this.”
“Just to say a big thank you from Joe Seward NSDC, he was exhausted but enjoyed the experience. We have already seen Joe working on his back stroke turns and putting in to practise some of the new skills he was shown.
Joe has a real commitment to swimming and training, but has in the past found it hard to stay motivated when top swimmers in our club are so much taller than him, however on his return he has skills to focus on and has committed to make these improvement.
Finally just as an aside Derek was flying on Monday night don’t know if this was a coincidence, but it seems the camp motivated swimmers and coaches. Well done”
“I would just like to say thank you to you and your team for running the county camp. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I have taken away some good advice.
Thank you very much.”
“I
just wanted to let you know that Abbie (Johnson) thoroughly enjoyed and felt she
gained a lot from the weekend swim camp. She couldn't stop talking about
it - until she fell asleep on the sofa!
Thank you for organising such a successful event”
“Just an email to say on behalf of my son Joel - thank you very much for the t-shirt that arrived in the post , he was thrilled. And also to thank yourself and Matt the coach on behalf of Joel for the opportunity to enjoy such a great weekend of swimming, he returned back to Maidenhead very enthusiastic about his weekend away and the opportunities presented to him and the group of swimmers he was able to meet,
Thank you”
“Thank you so much for organising the B&SB Regional Camp. My daughter, Anya from Tilehurst, had an exhausting time but has said she got a lot out of the weekend.”
“…to
thank you and Matt for Meg’s county camp. She had a brilliant time. I’ve been
trying to find out what the best bits were but to be honest she has been so
positive about it all its pretty impossible to find anything negative to
say!!!!!
Thank you so much to both of you for giving up your time to run it – I’m not
sure that a 13 year old ever fully appreciates amazing opportunities like that
but I do know that she has come back from it full of energy and very positive
about her swimming – and for that, in itself, we are very grateful.”
“I thought the camp was fantastic, I picked up a lot of tips from Matt, his dad and the other coaches and it was a pleasure coaching the swimmers. Thank you for inviting me, i would certainly love to be involved again.”
“We just wanted to thank you both for giving up your time to organise the County Camp this week-end. Kate thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot. She has now collapsed exhausted into bed!”
“On behalf of the parents of all our girls; thanks once again for your hard work in putting this event back together again. The 3 "Otters" had a fantastic time and took a lot from the weekend.”
