National County Team Championships 2007

Ponds Forge, Sheffield, Sunday 21 October

With more than half the squad making their county debut - 17 out of 24 - Berks and South Bucks were placed an excellent 9th out of 20 (up 2 places from 11th last year) in their third season back in Division 1. With the squad were coaches Rosa Gallop and Nigel Willis, two officials - Roger Prior and Nigel Brand and County President Janet Hopkins and her husband, Chris.

"I'd like to congratulate all the swimmers for their performances on the day - everyone found something extra. I don't know whether or not the excellent team spirit was a result of 'bonding' whilst watching the rugby on Saturday night but certainly the team produced fabulous swimming to finish 9th overall. They were also a pleasure to take away - their behaviour throughout was great.

Report

The Berks & South Bucks team swam to their best ever finish in the National County Team Championships finishing 9th of the 20 teams in Division 1. With all team members rising to the occasion, there were PBs or improvements in entry rankings in almost every event.

Top individual placing, and 19 points, went to Kathryn Willis who finished second in the 14/15 100 backstroke. William Hammond, swimming in the 12/13 boys, recorded a 3 second PB to finish 5th in the 100m breaststroke and a 2 second PB to finish 4th in the 100m freestyle. Further top 10 placings in individual events were recorded by Tom Keen, Andrew Willis, Thomas Norgate, Anna Jemielity, Sophie Elphick, Katherine Shaw, Kathryn Willis & Lizzie Hetherington.

The 12/13 girls medley team – Katherine Shaw, Sophie Elphick, Ellie Wood & Alexandra Wiseman – raced brilliantly to finish 5th and the 16/17 boys – Andrew Willis, Jamie Shields, Thomas Norgate & York-Peter Kloeppel finished 8th . The closest race of the day came in the final event, the 6 x 50m freestyle team. With teams able to compete in any order, and many teams starting with older swimmers, Berks & S Bucks began with their younger swimmers. The first three - Katherine Shaw, William Hammond & Lizzie Hetherington - kept the team in contention in the heat; the fourth swimmer, Steven King, brought the team through to a joint lead; and Nicola Baddeley & York-Peter Kloeppel maintained form to a fingertip finish in the heat and 7th place overall.

Very well done to all who swam. You can view a report, our results.
